What is insight/awareness?
Insight is a cognitive skill that comes under the umbrella of executive functioning. It is a term used very regularly by professionals; however, it can be very difficult to define. Put simply, it is to do with knowing/understanding about oneself and others, with the aim of maintaining or improving the way we do/interact with something. Brown et al (2014)describe it as: “A readiness to explore intellectually and emotionally how and why I, and those I interact with, behave, think and feel as we do, and for me to adapt my behaviour accordingly.”
